Shanghai takes the lead in launching a beverage nutrition grading pilot, with brands such as Chagee and Nayuki already displaying A to D labels.
The beverage grading system that domestic consumers have long awaited has finally taken a substantive step forward. The Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced the launch of a pilot "nutritional choice" grading label for beverages, classifying freshly made drinks and packaged beverages into four health levels: A, B, C, and D. Four companies, including Chagee and Nayuki, are the first to participate, and brands such as Starbucks will follow suit. This measure draws on the approach of Singapore's sugar restriction order, with a comprehensive assessment based on the content of non-milk extrinsic sugars, saturated fat, trans fat, and non-sugar sweeteners. Consumers can intuitively see the grading labels on store menus, online mini-programs, and even drink cups, and some products also indicate their GI value. Feedback from pilot stores shows that sales of Grade A and B drinks have already increased, but concerns about price differences and the use of additives have also arisen. [more…]
NIO Power Swap Stations Launch Freshly Ground Coffee Service: Robotic Arms Deliver Drinks to Car Windows, Shanghai Pilot Sparks Heated Discussion Among Owners
As early as 2022, the new energy vehicle brand NIO created its own coffee brand to offer exclusive beverages to customers visiting its stores. Recently, some owners have discovered that this coffee service has expanded from the stores to battery swap stations, where fully automatic coffee machines have been installed and are in the testing phase. After users place orders via a mobile mini-program, the coffee is precisely delivered by a robotic arm to the driver's window, while bottled drinks are handed over by staff. Currently, only the Minxin Tea City battery swap station in Shanghai is running a trial of "charging coffee," and the brand says it will adjust the equipment based on feedback and may expand it nationwide in the future. This cross-industry service has drawn praise from car owners and also sparked discussions about safety and scenario expansion. [more…]

Starbucks China Teams Up with Amap to Launch "Roadside Pickup": Can Curbside Pickup Solve the Parking Problem for Order Collection?
For drivers who want a cup of coffee, the biggest headache is often not placing the order, but finding a parking space. Parking on the roadside risks a ticket, while entering a parking lot feels like too much hassle—a dilemma that has given rise to a new way of thinking. Starbucks China recently partnered with Amap to pilot a "curbside pickup" service at selected stores in Beijing and Shanghai: users plan their route and place an order in advance, and a barista waits at a designated roadside spot, so the drink can be collected as soon as the car arrives. This feature saves more time on parking and queuing than the traditional "drive-thru," but it requires an extra service fee and currently covers only about 150 stores. Can it truly solve the pain point of meal pickup for commuters, and what challenges will it bring to store operations? This article takes you through a closer look. [more…]
Costa's first "drive-thru" store in China lands in Shanghai, escalating competition in the coffee takeaway scene.
Competition in China's coffee market is extending from the number of stores to the battle for consumption scenarios. Recently, Costa Coffee opened its first "drive-thru" store in China on Tainan West Road in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. This model, which allows customers to pick up their orders without leaving their cars, has a history of many years overseas, but is still a novelty in China. Notably, the store also offers meeting room rentals and co-working services, putting it in direct competition with the "shared space" concept store previously launched by Starbucks. Costa once regarded Starbucks as its biggest competitor, but the gap in store scale between the two in China is now quite obvious. Whether this "drive-thru" store can help Costa accelerate its expansion in China is worth continued attention. [more…]

Environmental issues have long ceased to be a novelty in the coffee world—packaging innovation, coffee grounds reuse, paper straw replacements, as well as bring-your-own-cup discounts and in-store reusable cup pilots, are all being continuously explored. Recently, FamilyMart announced that it will massively roll out reusable cups to 400 stores in the Taiwan region, becoming East Asia's first convenience store chain to introduce reusable cups at scale. Previously, Starbucks launched a "borrowed cup" pilot in Seattle, and McDonald's also partnered with the Loop platform to test reusable cups. Can these initiatives truly change consumption habits and drive the industry to reduce plastic? This article will walk you through the practical paths of these pioneers and the real challenges they face. [more…]

Zhengzhou BRT stations introduce Mixue Bingcheng outlets, sparking concerns over planning permit disputes and occupation of tactile paving
Zhengzhou Bus Group has teamed up with Mixue Bingcheng to open a store inside a bus rapid transit station, with the first pilot located on the west side of the intersection of Huayuan Road and Nongye Road. This attempt is seen as an extension of bus services, allowing passengers to buy drinks while waiting for their bus and even enjoy discounts with their ride records. However, the store's construction is alleged to have proceeded without a construction land planning permit. The Jinshui District Urban Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau posted a notice to deliver enforcement documents, but no one signed for them, leaving the procedure at an impasse. Meanwhile, netizens have questioned whether the store occupies the sidewalk and tactile paving, potentially affecting passage. Zhengzhou Bus responded that the station passage is wide enough and promised to make dynamic adjustments. The incident has sparked discussion about the boundaries of commercial development in public spaces and provides a new case of cross-industry collaboration for the coffee and tea beverage industry. Luckin's tea brewing machines get the cold shoulder at stores: wrapped in cling film, slapped with "do not use" signs, yet rolled out nationwide only to sit idle on counters
Since last December, Luckin Coffee has piloted tea extraction machines in some stores in Guangzhou, planning to replace tea powder in light milk tea with freshly extracted hot tea to enhance the taste and health attributes of the drinks. However, since the testing phase, this device has been complained about by store staff as "good to look at but useless." Now that it has been gradually rolled out nationwide, many stores have wrapped it in plastic wrap and affixed prohibition stickers, turning it directly into an idle ornament on the counter. Staff feedback indicates that it is cumbersome to clean and inefficient, instead increasing the workload. Although management requires its use, frontline employees still deal with back-end detection by "turning it on at the start of the shift and off at the end." This article sorts out the various real-world dilemmas encountered during the tea extraction machine's journey from pilot to promotion, as well as the game between the brand and the stores. [more…]
JDE Peet’s Partners with Enveritas to Launch Global Deforestation-Free Coffee Program Covering Four Major Coffee-Producing Countries
The EU introduced the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in June this year, strictly prohibiting the sale of commodities linked to deforestation in the EU market, with coffee explicitly included. The regulation requires operators to conduct due diligence on the origin of goods to prove they are not associated with deforestation or forest degradation, or they will face fines or even export bans. The regulation will take effect from the end of 2024 to early 2025, and countries and coffee companies are actively responding. Global coffee giant JDE Peet's recently announced that it has signed memorandums of cooperation on deforestation-free coffee with coffee-producing countries such as Vietnam, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, and Uganda, and is using Enveritas' satellite imagery, AI, and on-the-ground verification technology to ensure that coffee does not come from deforested land while protecting the interests of smallholder farmers. This move is highly consistent with the new EU rules and also provides a reference for a sustainable supply chain for brands of interest to coffee enthusiasts, such as Front Street Coffee. [more…]
